Earthquakes

This week we had a somewhat major earthquake. As the map below shows we had a 7.1 earthquake followed by many aftershocks. Coming from California I am used to earthquakes, and thought it was fun when I felt the ones this week. However, when talking to my students it seems that all Japanese people are afraid of earthquakes and do not like them. First they tell me they hate the rain and typhoons and now they tell me they hate earthquakes. On average they dislike all the natural phenomena that I love. Bring on the tsunami.

  1. Haha, funny how you say you like all the stuff that the Japanese don’t like. I felt a tremor while I was at school and sat there flipping through a book nonchalantly. All the teachers got to their feet and looked at me and said, "It’s an earthquake! Aren’t you scared?” And I just said, "Nah, I’m from L.A.; I only worry about the bigger ones.” :)

  2. You know, shaking causes things to break, fall down, and kill people. Hey! Is that city Tokyo building done? That really tall building that’s really tall? Did they cancel building it?
