One of my gaming friends, Todd Van Der Pluym, is a professional sand sculptor. The trick is to get the right sand. The stuff at the beach is usually not good. His main client is large indoor shopping centers where the weather is controlled (and no rain). His work can last about three months with some deterioration over time.
